Amy Ku'uleialoha Stillman's Notes

Slow down, dear listeners, and savor moments of simply . . . being.
Suitable for lulling children into sweet dreams, these new Hawaiian-language songs also speak to adult yearnings for refuge from the tides of chaos and the whirlwinds of everyday life. Experience one facet of kaona--of multiple meanings at play.
In traditional lullabies, uncomplicated perspectives envelope listeners, and gently nurture our souls. To convey these expressions of comfort and refuge, the musical settings of the songs here are exactly the opposite of uncomplicated.
The songwriting team of Daniel Ho and Amy Ku'uleialoha Stillman began with new treatments of traditional lullabies, then reached out to renowned masterpieces of classical music such as Beethoven's “Pathetique Sonata,” Brahms' “Alto Rhapsody,” and Satie's “Gymnopedie.” The complexity in the resulting arrangements adds layers of counterpoint to the direct simplicity of the expressions in the texts.
Tia Carrere's sophisticated interpretations combine all of the nuances of tone and breath into an elegant palette of emotion. As their sounds wash over you, these songs invite you to sit back, close your eyes, and let them carry you away from your worries and cares.
Huana ke aloha-aloha overflows abundantly.

Song List

Translation:
Remember, do not forget
On your path
Turn, return
Glance back at the parents
In your view
Turn, return
Nurture for the soul
As you till
Turn, return
Holy Spirit watch over you
In your wandering
Turn, return
I call out, answer
To life
Turn, return
Translation:
You are mine, oh royal one
Great is your beauty
As you lay peacefully
Asleep, dreaming
Great is my desire
To see for myself
As you are drifting tranquilly
Return to me here
As you are drifting tranquilly
Return to me here
Love is overflowing
Love is overflowing
Translation:
My baby, rocking gently
I see your beauty
I hear your sweet voice
I care for your aloha
My baby, rocking gently
The world is peaceful
The breeze is gentle
You are blessed, my baby
Translation:
You are the child cherished
By the parents
Truly a favorite
Who ensures happiness
A treasured child
A child from the heavens
A treasured child
Truly a heavenly child
The leaves multiply, the liko buds appear
And bloom in the forest
Wealth will increase
When the garden is well cultivated
Translation:
The Lord bless you
And keep you
The Lord protect you
The Lord bless you, heavenly child
And keep you
The Lord protect you
Translation:
Cherished one, hush
Look out at the calm ocean
When the tide comes in
Look up at the trees
As the wind blows gently
Listen to the gentle rustling sounds
Soft rustling of leaves
Let the thoughts drift off into dreams
Cradled by the mother
Sleep restfully
Hundreds of stars in the heavens
The world is at peace
Translation:
A precious love
For the heavenly child
A precious love
For the child who is a lei
Cherished lei
Beautiful lei, without equal
Indulged with love
For the child who is a lei
Translation:
A flower, a flower, a flower has bloomed
A flower, a flower, a beautiful flower
Two, two, two flowers
Two, two, two flowers
We two, we two gather the flowers
We two, we two gather
Rain, rain, the rain is falling
Rain, rain, falling
Told, told is this story
Two of us beautiful flowers
Huana Ke Aloha
